Brief History of Piggy Banks

Author: Ron Askotzky

After selling piggy banks for more than a year, suddenly it dawned on me – why are they called piggy banks? What is meat pig related saving money? A pig is the last animal to associate with the savings! Why not bunny banks or doggy banks and also, why what an animal at all! In addition, the bank sounds like it was designed as a child from the number for adults using a piggy bank to collect the change?

To satisfy my curiosity I did some research and have learned interesting book and I thought I would share with you.

As you know, many, particularly ceramic, piggy banks are not open to withdraw money. Now, why is this? The theory is that this should serve as a lesson lesson seems to have been forgotten by many adults! Maybe we should have a pot in our home and deposit our money before returning home every day! I digress …

The question remains, why is it called a piggy bank and why is it in the form of a pig?

One theory is that, as is common to buy a pig and feed the remains until ready for slaughter, and also to feed our piggy bank with minor changes ( "Notes") until full and then break to reap the benefits of our investments. Accordingly, the pork would also be appropriate for adults.

A more popular theory is that, in fact, pork is not nothing like a pig! In the Middle Ages, when the metal is expensive, cheap, orange clay called pygg was the common media to make pots and pots, and was considered a pygg pot, for example. One of these pots are often used to hold coins. Finally, the bottle pygg pygg bank or used for parts, probably by chance, became known as a bank or a piggy bank! The general consensus is that this last one hundred years in England where artisans have been recruited to pygg banks and are unfamiliar with pygg made by banks in the form of pork.

The oldest recorded piggy claimed 1500 from Indonesia. If so, which precedes the pygg theory for almost 1000 years! Perhaps there is a link between pork and save money in this culture, but seems not to have influenced Western culture, where the modern piggy bank only spent clay pygg only a few hundred years.

Naturally, the bank is not popular in all cultures. The pig is an animal considered unclean according to the Old Testament and thus is not owned or eaten by the Jews benefited. Just way, Islam forbids eating pork because of the impure. Therefore, one should not expect to find too many piggy banks in Muslim countries and households Jews and Muslims.

The modern piggy bank, whether ceramic, plastic, or metal balls, was very popular collection of coins and gifts for children because his attractive and humorous. Moreover, for a smile or laugh, we experience every time you introduce a change in our piggy bank to be reminded by the lesson it teaches us!

In addition, the famous phrase "break the bank" has nothing to do with the wallet!
