How to choose between oils, acrylics, watercolors and pastels
One of the first decisions you should do when you start painting is what type of paint (also called medium) for use. The following information is intended to inform and help decide between the paintings of the most commonly used.
What paint and what is the difference between each type of paint?
Technical Description bit short!
Paint is a dispersion of pigments, resins and filling a liquid carrier. By varying the basic ingredients of different kinds of paint can be created.
Oil paintings
Paintings oil, as the name suggests contains oil. This is usually a natural vegetable oils such as linseed oil or made from synthetic oil.
The oil is used for the transport of pigments and resins (alkyd). The color pigments can be in the form of a soluble dye or insoluble powder finely dispersed in the liquid. The different colors are made from one or several pigments mixed. By varying the different amounts, not just different colors but different shades and hues can be produced.
The resin is dissolved in the oil and acts as a binder for various ingredients, and also binds the paint to the surface is applied.
When the liquid evaporates after application, the resin and pigment, and remain, a form of skin sticks to the surface of the painting.
Acrylic paints
Acrylics are similar in composition to the oil painting, ie, are similar in appearance and contain a liquid carrier, pigments and resins. However, the liquid water is used.
The resin is not the same guy who paints in oil, as it combines with water. The acrylic resin is not dissolved in water but forms an emulsion (forms globules). When the water evaporates the globules of the resin from sticking together to form a skin. The pigments used are also combined with water and are chemically Other than oil pigments.
Watercolors
Watercolors consist of pigments, filler and water if they are in liquid form, or pigments and filling strength. As they are not components of resin to bind the pigments and form a skin, based on the surface they are applied, to be absorbent. A filling is a fine powder which can be used as the pigment and provides texture / body.
Cakes
Cakes are a good way to paste a water color. The water is much less used in their manufacture (compared to liquid paint), soluble in water and kits are used to maintain its strong hitting. Oil-based pastels are similar, with much less oil used in the manufacture of oil painting.
What are the differences between different types Paintings?
Oils:
• dry slowly allowing time to work and the color of the mixture. The temperature of the air you work, and the proportion of diluent used determine the drying time
• can be used to produce layers of texture to the building
• Once dry enough, it can be painted without disturbing the underlying layers
• richness of color that retain their intensity when dried, can be left open and later returned to a change in color
• can be used heavily or thin, smooth lava increases the chances of different painting techniques
• colors are resistant to bleaching by light the sun and the surfaces can be cleaned of dirt with alcohols
• completely waterproof and resistant to the elements
• need to clean brush and white spirits to clean brushes
• usually applies to non-absorbent surfaces, including counseling, wood, canvas and art paper
Acrylic:
• dries quickly, but still allows time for work and the blending of colors. Perhaps a disadvantage when working with applications thick hot environment
• less viscous than oil easier to mix, but they tend to produce less texture and brushstrokes
• can be mixed with water or other media and gels that are compatible with water
• can be used heavily (impasto), such as oils, or the end of washing, as waterclours can be used on both absorbent and non absorbent surfaces
• once dry can be painted without affecting the layers
• Resistant Water when dry
• darker colors when applied to dry so it can give problems if the color
• less resistant to sunlight oil, the surfaces can be cleaned with an alcohol dirt
• the need for water for cleaning brushes, but can give problems if the brushes to dry before washing
Watercolor:
• mixed with water color transparent
• dries quickly and requires pre-wetting the surface in the hot environment
• tendency to bleed if proper techniques for washing, but it can be difficult for the high definition
• transparency, it is difficult to correct mistakes or cover up
• colors dry lighter than when applied so it can give problems if the color
• No aquarelles blank white paper as you work. Therefore, it can be difficult to produce white highlights preliminary or without mask
• paint can be removed by rewetting may be useful in some techniques, but can be difficult to use in hot or wet / dry rewetting where needed
• Brushes are easily cleaned with water and paint is reusable when it is dry, adding water
• the color intensity is lower when compared with other and media tends to bleach in direct sunlight. Problems with the dis-coloration of support and the media can occur in wet
• very it difficult to clean without damaging the surface so as to be protected from the elements of glass or other suitable material
Cakes:
• mixing color on paper or the course material or a mixture of time so no drying
• Easy to use and require no brushes
• oil pastels may be diluted and mixed with turpentine, or discarded in order to reveal the colors underneath, known as sgraffito
• a wide range colors are available, however, usually a greater range of colors that are necessary to create an image in comparison to other media
• the different brands and pigments tend to vary smoothly, if difficulties arise in the supply of different suppliers
• soft pastels tend to be susceptible to staining and color in the media of communication to reach, unless precautions such as fixatives or mounts are used to maintain the surface of glass
Other considerations:
Cost:
• Water is the cheapest to put up with you and most of the artists to begin this way. However, it requires different techniques of watercolor and other media may limit development
• Acrylic is not as expensive as oil and can bridge the gap between oil and water
• oils are more expensive to buy initially, but goes too far when the paint thinly. Several tables can be produced from a single tube of each color to solvents or solvent drag small children as it approaches. However, those oils linseed oil which contains the carrier generally has a weak smell and is essentially nontoxic. The pigments are associated with oil and are not available to cause hazards. White spirits as turpentine and cleaning brush or solvents are flammable and should be used sparingly. However, the volume is low and the risks are fewer times compared to the paintings of domestic use. Say This low odor paint versions are available.
Acrylic:
Acrylics are less dangerous because they are not used solvents and pigments remain integrated into the painting.
Watercolor:
May be harmful if used traditional pigments, which are not bound by the resin and dried to a fine powder. However, the amounts used are so small that the risks are minimal.
Cakes:
Similar to watercolors, soft pastels, but can produce large amount of dust and therefore care must be taken to minimize the amount you inhale. For example, do not jump on their work to remove loose pastel.
His choosing paint
Choose what you paint. Try them and you soon find out if you enjoy working with him and get results or not. If you like some of the properties of different paints, you can try to work with a mixture of paintings (known as mixed media) in a painting. The change is both challenging and rewarding.
Advice and information as a guide to the properties of different paints. The only way to know if you want a painting is trying.
