How to make a doll or figure?
I do a project where I do my own Greek god. To "illustrate," I prefer to make a wrist to call God. I do nothing prepared. How will I recommend this doll? I wish that is at least half the size of a hand, but not much bigger than a Barbie. In fact, I never thought of modeling clay. 
I thought more like a rag doll.
The first place I would go to a store Michael's craft as a professional. You'll find training for personnel who can best help in this regard. Because you did not say, I am assuming that you thought to be a kind of clay. Good luck with your design. And the list of your local library for books about it.
